This chapter analyses the portrayal of Lucia Joyce, James Joyce’s daughter, in older biographical sources and recent fictionalisations. Unveiling the prejudice and misunderstanding that drove early biographical accounts of the Joyces and their circle to dismiss Lucia’s talents and reduce her to the cliché of the mentally disabled daughter of a brilliant father, the overview goes on to show how gradual efforts were made to uncover her narrative and to expose the double gender standard and the misrepresentation of mental illness which had cast a shadow on Lucia’s life story. After acknowledging the importance of Carol Loeb Shloss’s and Lisa Appignanesi’s work for debunking stereotypes about psychiatric patients, the discussion turns to biofictions about Lucia Joyce from the 1990s to 2020, showing how they typically project a future as compensation for Lucia’s policed and censored past. However, often these alternative scenarios are tainted by a strong note of escapism. The exceptions include a graphic novel and a set of films, which, thanks to the flexibility of their media, constitute richer recreations of Lucia’s dancing career and depict her mental health struggles more subtly. Returning Lucia to the medium of expression in which she was most at home, the dance biopics display a sophisticated use of metaphor and rhythm. The question remains whether literary re-imaginings of Lucia Joyce can produce similar effects. | |
