Beschreibung:
This chapter examines how the young women’s assertions of legal right to repair their honour, secure financial compensation and arrange for their intimate partners to have physical custody of the babies as well as pay for their upbringing became recoded as state projects to discipline female sexuality. The history of the history of the ‘pregnancy declarations’ involves an archival, historiographical and methodological puzzle. ‘Pregnancy declarations’ have become a pivotal element in an argument that placed the regulation of gender and family as a key element in state formation. The legal actions were primarily between young workers in consensual relationships in a city where both single women and men worked most often in the silk industry and the allied textile manufacturing trades. Confusion about the terms of the Edict clearly existed in the Old Regime although so did constant correction in print and court of the suggestion that it did require a declaration.
