| Polish Nobel laureate Olga Tokarczuk’s opus magnum, The Books of Jacob (2014), offers a refreshing perspective on the act of connecting cultures: The novel does not simply preach tolerance and mutual understanding, but rather focuses on phenomena of isunderstanding and incomprehension. In doing so, it underlines the inevitability of these phenomena and stresses their productive traits. In this context, literature acts as intermediary, as reconciliating factor - and as yet another source of incomprehension. Therefore, my goal is to show how literary devices are employed in The Books of Jacob to establish phenomena of misunderstanding and to shift the text into an ‘in-between’. A special focus lies on Tokarczuk’s concept of the ‘tender narrator’ and her poetics of ‘in-between’, which are - at least in my opinion - closely interconnected and ultimately shape a ‘tender in-between’. | |
