Beschreibung:
The famous seventeenth-century English diarist, Samuel Pepys recorded numerous incidents that show he was a serial sexual predator. Sexual violence can take many forms. Contemporary definitions include the rape of women or children, non-physical coercion that pressures a man, woman or child to submit, and unwanted sexual contact or unwanted sexual experiences. This chapter reviews the short history of the historiography of sexual violence as a category and then links it to the social spaces and hierarchies associated with domesticity. It examines sexual violence broadly in early modern practice and historiography, and then zooms in to interrogate a specific configuration empirically through the experiences of young single men and women in the French city of Lyon between about 1660–1760. Domesticity was integrally linked to sexual coercion and exploitation as well as to various more positive connotations and indeed narratives of sexual violence were often framed as peril stories.
