| This essay examines three GDR authors’ creative incorporation of the conceptual metaphor LIFE IS A JOURNEY into their narratives from the 1960s. In Brigitte Reimann’s Ankunft im Alltag (1961), the journey metaphor reflects an uncertain yet hopeful atmosphere in a developing socialist society. The same metaphor features in Anna Seghers’s “Das wirkliche Blau” (1967), in which the protagonist searches for the elusive pigment that will bring him self-sufficiency. In Christa Wolf’s Nachdenken über Christa T. (1968), conceptual metaphors highlight Christa T.’s longing for an ideal socialist life, as well as the narrator’s pursuit of the true essence of her friend Christa T. | |
