| The surveys conducted by local churches prior to both Roman Episcopal Synods in 2014 and 2015 uncovered a contradictory picture. On the one hand, basic doctrinal teachings like the indissolubility of marriage, the requirement of conjugal fidelity, or deep respect for the family, meet with wide approval among the faithful. On the other hand, normative individual judgments such as the rejection of artificial contraception or the negative assessment of homosexual partnerships meet with no sympathy and rejection. This article asks what this rejection means for the self-understanding of the Church as a comunity of faith and for the claim of the Church’s teaching office to an authentic inperpretation of the common faith. | |
