| Across eighteenth-century Europe, a number of authors composed grammars, of their own language or of foreign languages, ‘for the Ladies’, ‘pour les Dames’, ‘per le Dame’, ‘für die Damen’/‘für Frauenzimmer’. These texts, meant also more generally for non-Latinate readers and beginners, claimed they offered easy, engaging, and innovative study methods. In France one of the languages that feature most among works of this type is Italian. Parisian ladies wanted to learn it to dazzle in society and there was no shortage of Italian teachers keen to assist them in their enterprise with their grammars. | |
