Ambiguous figures, known also as reversible figures, were initially used by the psychology of perception in order to describe the so-called multistable perception. The painting (Salvador Dali), as well as the philosophy (Thomas S. Kuhn) spotted ambiguous figures as paradigmatic, exemplary representations. Furthermore the literary criticism (Wolfgang Iser) explains the comical phenomenon, based on the tipping principle, that characterizes the switching from a figure to another while observing an ambiguous figure. The present paper focuses also on the literary text as an ambiguous figure, however not regarding to the comical elements but rather to the phenomenon of intertextuality. It analyses the text „Our Mother” in the novel „The Sad Mother’s Song” by Carmen Francesca Banciu, whose textual structure points to two different sorts of text: the prayer and the hymn. | |
