This article explores the representation of women's ageing in prose written by two Spanish women of the early modern period: María de Zayas and Mariana de Carvajal. Older women (namely widows) are key members of Zayas' frame-narrative community. Ultimately, Zayas' female protagonists succeed in creating a matria, a space dominated by older women. In particular, Zayas portrays the convent as a haven for women across the generations. This denouement may be compared with that of Carvajal's frame narrative. Once again, widows occupy central roles and, by the end of the storytelling festivities, they have arranged marriage pairings for the soirée's younger participants. However, contrasting with Zayas' less conventional frame, the matria is but a temporary creation in Carvajal's text. | |
