| This article analyzes the political discussions about family law reform efforts in Austria in the 1950s. Different actors - political parties, officers of the State Department of Justice, experts from various fields, women’s organizations and church representatives - were involved in the negotiation process. The debates focused on gender norms, family concepts, and the relevance as well as the role of the family as a central societal institution. Questions of equality between man and woman were also part of the controversy. The author examines the different positions the respective actors had in regard to gender norms. Furthermore she scrutinizes their underlying notions of equality. The author argues that, although the principle of equality served as an important point of reference for most actors, the interpretations of this principle varied and led to contradictory results. | |
