Beschreibung:
This article traces French author Annie Ernaux's approach to memory and mourning from Les Armoires vides, her first novel published in 1974, to her most recent work, Les Années, in 2008. The first section focuses mainly on those texts which mourn for a lost lover, Passion simple (1992) and Se perdre (2001), and the elegies to the parents, La Place (1984) and Une femme (1988). The representation of the memory of the lost culture of origin in La Honte (1997) is also discussed. Ernaux's treatment of memory and mourning is related to Freudian theory and contrasted with that of Proust, whose role as reference point, inspiration and cultural 'opponent' in Ernaux's writing is elucidated.
