Poets Barbara Köhler and Thomas Kiing employ visual art forms as structuring elements in their 1991 volumes Deutsches Roulette and brwnstabm, respectively. This article explores examples of this technique, understood in terms of the poets' shared concerns for rendering history and change, particularly in the context of German unification. Significantly, far from offering a completed picture in words, their poems depict a process of picturing—of both creating images and viewing them—in which objects are continually altered, effaced, and newly combined to avoid supporting a single conclusion. Of the same generation, though from opposite sides of the Wall, Köhler and Kling make use of this lyrical technique to express both the cautionary and redemptive potential in envisioning history as process over result. | |
