The notion ,transnationalism' refers to the multiple ties and interactions linking people and institutions across borders of nation-states. Based on anthropological fieldwork in a global community of women religious, the paper explores transnational connections past and present. In the 19th century catholic nuns left Germany mainly for two reasons: they migrated to other European countries because of the ,Kulturkampf' and they were part of the Great migration to the US. After Vatican II many womens' congregations founded new branches in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The article focusses on gender in a transnational setting and the conflicts of power between priests and nuns as well as among sisters of different ethnic and cultural background. | |
