Beschreibung:
In his courtly romance "Demantin" Berthold von Holle places special emphasis on the depiction of masculinity. He creates an idealised chivalrous world that is constituted by and preserved in knightly single combat. From these encounters male bonds originate and here they are perpetually celebrated. The female gender functions as an object of reference in the background whereas a form of male homosical desire brings the knights together in combat. Thus, it is friendship between men that is responsible for narrative progress. The protagonists Demantin and Firganant are reciprocal guarantors for their differing roles of perfect knight errant and ideal king.
