The early work of Oskar Kokoschka is characterized by an almost obsessive examination of the theme "sexuality and violence". This examination of the theme is not only visible in his play "Murderer, hope of women", but also in a number of paintings and graphics. These works are all centered around the immensly popular motiv of the "eroticism of cruelty" in fin-de-siècle Vienna. Kokoschka was mainly inspired by the expression dance and by late gothic art. For Kokoschka, Unlike the writers of the "Junges Wien"-movement, derived less information from the antique greek culture. He drew his inspiration mainly from german painting from around 1500. The early work of Kokoschka was above all, with regards to content and form, inspired by the art of Hans Baldung Grien and Matthias Grünewald. | |
