Lily Weiser-Aall of Vienna was the first woman to be awarded the venia legendi for the academic discipline of folkloristics. Her contributions to the study of narrative and ritual folklore, to research on folk medicine and to the historic-geographic method have been of importance both for German-language and Scandinavian folkloristics. Her post doctoral dissertation "Young men's initiation and male covenants among the ancient Germans" (1927) joined the historical-philological approach with new perspectives in anthropology and the study of religion. However, the study also initiated the movement of questionable studies on male covenants during the thirties that were well-received by the National Socialists. Except for one semester, she never taught as an academic lecturer. Upon marriage, she moved to Oslo. She concerned herself with mythology and authored a monograph, "Folklore and Psychology". After her husband's death, she became curator at the Institute for Norwegian Ethnological Research where she was director until her retirement in the late sixties. | |
