this article explores some of the rhetorical challenges that Robinson faced in writing "Letter to the Women of England", and some of the strategies that she adopted in order to overcome those challenges. The author argues that as a woman writing to women within the male-dominated genre of political writing, Robinson faced difficulties in defining precisely who she was writing as, as well as who she was writing to. the signidicance of both the title and the pseudonym that she chose is considered and her use of key linguistic features, indlucing personal pronouns and premodifying adjectives, is examined. the author finds that "Letter to the women of England" is qualitatively different both from Robinson's own earlier political wrting, and from that of contemporaries such as Mary Wollstonecraft and Mary Hays | |
