This article examines what little is known - or can be determined - about the Romantic poet, Anna Maria Smallpiece, whose 1805 "Original Sonnets, and Other Small Poems" establishes her as a first-rate writer of sonnets. The 51 strong and well-crafted sonnets in "Original Sonnets" comprise an informal sequence on the subjects of lost love, mourning, and romantic melancholy. In analyzing some of these sonnets and their principal themes, the article addresses several questions that are central to the current reassessment of Romantic writers, especially women. What role is played for the reader by gender - and gender expectations - for instance, when we kno virtually nothing about the author's life and circumstances other than her gender? How do assumptions and expectations about gender color what we rad and how we read it? The article contemplates this and other related questions in assessing how gendered considerations function within the linked processes of interpretation and valuation, both in Smallpiece's work and, by implication, in the larger body of Romantic writing in general. | |
