Margaret Oliphant has often been accused of being anti-feminist, but an examination of the rhetorical strategies she employs in her essay "The Laws Concerning Women" in "Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine" suggests other possibilities. The use of male voice, ambiguous pronouns, and unusual argumentative strategies reveals that Oliphant's position on the Woman Question was not clear. The article offers subtle subtextual hints that she possibly presented her argument against changing the coverture laws in a manner that met more with her audience's approval than with her own beliefs. Her rhetorical strategies further indicate that Oliphant herself was unsure of her stance regarding women's rights. Writing this and other articles on the Woman Question helped her to analyze her beliefs and provided a means of self-definition she possibly would not have otherwise have had. | |
