| Does an acknowledgement of differences between women mean we must abandon the utopian politics which were characteristic of 1970s feminism? This article pursues this question through a discussion of "the dream of a common language". beginning with Donna Haraway's plea for a"feminist infidel heteroglossia", it takes up the issue of translation and its relationship to the idea of a just society, asking how we can speank to each other across differences of language - both actual and metaphorical. The article draws on theoretical work from Derrida, Irigaray and Bell Hooks, among others, but it also uses personal and professional experience and a range of fictional texts to argue that we need to rediscover a utopian ideal, whether described in terms of "a common language" or a just society. It suggests that the practice and ethics of translation provide a model of how to root that ideal in the materiality of our differences | |
