Beschreibung:
This article considers the ways that the nationalist project sponsored by the contemporary Serbian state has redefined women's roles as "mothers of the nation" and draws attention to the differeing ways in which this role is defined. It questions the extent to which the stated aim of ensuring "the biological survival of the Serbian nation" has motivated this reassessment of women's roles, and suggests that the instrumentalization of women serves the political interests of state-sponsored nationalism in a number of other ways, particularly as a means of asserting and consolidating power.
