| The "generic masculine", a convention to refer to both men and women with masculine word forms, is critized by feminist linguists as gender biased. Several proposals have been made for the substitution of "generic masculine" nouns and pronouns. These proposals, however, have hardly been texted with regard to their approüriateness. In this study three of these proposals are empirically tested with regard to communicationally relevant text qualities such as "readability", conciseness", "Motivational stimulation" and "aesthetics". On the basis of the results consequences are outlined for a language use which takes into account gender equality as well as text comprehensibility | |
