This reading of Sarah Kirsch's latest prose work as "postmodern metafiction" (Hutcheon 1988) explores how Kirsch implicitly theorizes about memory as she recounts her life in East Germany. By combining the autobiographical with fictional and fantastic elements, Kirsch questions concepts of authenticity and continuity traditionally associated with autobiography. Instead, she foregrounds that the processes of remembering and writing are constructs. Kirsch narrates stories which imply a meaningful ending, and she evokes nature images full of harmony. These narratives and images are disrupted by means of contrast, irony, and parody. The article concludes that Kirsch's contemporary version of Grimm's fairy tale "Allerleirauh" parodies the idea that "romantic love" provides the ultimate meaning to life, or that moving from East to West Germany has a fairy-tale ending. | |
