Beschreibung:
The struggle for the acceptance of the rights of women as human rights (cf. Human Rights World Conference in Vienna 1993; 4th World Conference on Women in Beijing 1995) shows how urgent an issue the conception of a gender-aware moral theory is for our times. The philosophical impact of this political conflict has to be reconstructed within the framework of the debate on universalism vis-à-vis cultural relativism. Seyla Benhabibs conception of an "interactive universalism" is introduced here not only as a critique of the gender-blindness of modern cognitivistic moral theories, but as a convincing model of how gender-specific experience and ideas of good human life may be integrated in an universalist moral theory which has to be aware of the constitutive differences of human lives.
