Beschreibung:
This article compares the presentation of helen - one of the prominent female figures of the Trojan War - by Benoit de Sainte-Maure in his "Roman de Troie" by Herbort von Fritzlar in his "Liet von Troye". Benoit de Sainte-Maure is presumed to have written his Roman around 1165 in support of the Anglo-Norman nobility's keen interest to assert its purported descent from the nobility of Troy. In his "Liet", which was most likely written around 1195, Herbort von Fritzlar adapted Benoit's narrative for Hermann von Thüringen who saw the courtly culture of France as a model for his principality. Both authors narrate generally the same story of Helen, but this artivle attempts to show that they differe significantly in the presentation of her courtliness, of her intelligence, and, especially, of her love relationship with Paris, and that, as a consequence, the assignment of guilt for the destruction of Troy varies between Benoit and Herbort. these hypotheses are presented here als follows: an introduction into the surroundings of Benoit and Herbort and into the views of these narrators about Helen (II) is followed by the presentation of Helen by Benoit (III) and by Herbort (IV); the summary (V) compares both presentation
