| Christine de Pizan's reputation as a late medieval feminist is mainly based on her famous work "The Book of the City of ladies". Instead of searching for the roots of Western feminism, this paper focuses on Christine de Pizan's concepts of women and femininity as presented in this late medieval work, since her views on culture, society and sacred hsitory have been only of marginal interest in the feminist approaches to the text so far. The interdependencies between the structural and the content level, Christine de Pizan's self-presentation as a female intellectual as well as the general intentions of the book turn out to produce several different, indeed contradictory, ideas about feminity, revealing subversive tendencies in Christine de Pizan's work as well as a self-referential dimension in the text | |
