A powerful means of reading the work of simone de Beauvoir has been provided by "the legend" of her relationship with Sartre, with de Beauvoir herself being the key figure in its construction and promotion. Recent work by Fullbrook and Fullbrook (1993) has challenged this as a constructed web used to mask the fact that de Beauvoir was "the true philosopher", with Sartre at best borrowing extensively from her ideas when writing the key texts of "Sartrean" existenialism. Rather than reassessing fullbrook and Fullbrook's evidence, the utility of their general argument for understanding de Beauvoir's oeuvre between 1934 and 1949 is exlored. The article argues that over this period de Beauvoir was constructing a distinct philosophical project, her "ontological ethics", which is in fundamental respects both different from Sartrean existenialism and also philosophically preferable; and its key components are outlined and discussed. The evidence for Beauvoirian ontological ethics is overwhelmingly strong, and it seems to be the power of "the legend" which has prevented a thoroughgoing feminsit assessment of this project to date | |
