| Lessing's bourgeois tragedy, staging the intimacy of the domestic sphere, makes virginity emblematic of Diderot's prescription of the "fourth wall" which allows for absorption and identification with characters on the stage. Simultaneously, this aesthetics of absorption requires the imaginary transgression of the line between spectacle and spectator, fiction and reality; a transgression reflected on the plot level in the threat of Emilia's defloration by the prince. | |
