| Sex role stereotypes in East and West German Students. Although some gender-specific differences are biologically determined, social factors contribute to these differences, too. We focus on social differences and ask two questions: (1) To which extent can a change in social factors such as the increasing success of the feminist movement lead to different opinions concerning typically female and typically male characteristics? (2) Which influence exert different social factors on ratings of gender-specific stereotypes? To answer both questions norms of social desirability are compared. These comparisons refer to norms which had been gathered in theseventies and in the nineties in the former FRG and again in the former FRG and the former GDR in the nineties under comparable conditions. The results show that during about twenty years gender-specific stereotypes in the former FRG diminished to a great extent. They also show that differences in the strength of sex-role stereotypies differed between students from the eastern and western part of Germany. Some reasons for these differences are given as provisional explanations regarding different social factors. | |
