| Single-sex educational experience seems to encourage girls to advance into nontraditional school subjects (e.g. physics) and carriers (e.g. science): The purpose of the present investigation is to identify the underlying psychological mechanism. It is assumed that especially during the formative adolescent period one's sex as part of one's self-concept is spontaeously more salient in a coed than in a single-sex-class-room environment. as a result, girls from coed schools should be more likely to develop traditional sex role orientations and academic interests than girls from single-sex schools | |
