Beschreibung:
Cultural memory is one of those terms that produce more questions rather than a designation, the most obvious being: whose culture, whose memory, or better, memories? Black writing in the diaspora, like Toni Morrison's "Beloved", has addressed itself to the task of inventing lost or suppressed cultural memory. "Beloved", in the mode of testimony, specifically works to recover the trauma of Middle Passage and slavery; it inevitably reaches the limits of mediation, at least in any transparently mimentic sense. The article discusses how the novel balances a referentiality to histry with a strategic dilemma of representation, and which relation the resulting text has to a psotmodern media environment.
