| In "Effi Briest", Fontane created a poetic figure without any contradiction in her female nature and identity. Nevertheless she comes tragically into contradiction with society and with the image of the woman internalized by education as well as by identification with the male imagination of the 19th century. Breaking free from being caught in this image is possible for her only by regression into the bountiful wide spaces of primary love signifying death. Thus Fontane, nearly at the end of his authorship and life, characterized and buried a female ideal embodying his own deepest longings. | |
