| Research and programing on gender, peacebuilding and human rights has made notable progress in the last 25 years, owing, in particular, to the UN Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda. Despite these advances, however, numerous shortcomings and gaps remain in fully integrating a gender perspective in international work on peace and security. One of these gaps concerns the oversight and marginalization of masculinities and their linkages to violence. This research report engages with these dynamics and oversights, critically exploring the roles and workings of masculinities in transitional justice contexts. The report comparatively explores the linkages between masculinities, militarism, violence and human rights abuses, showing how militarized masculinities are among the root causes of violence and human rights abuses. Throughout international efforts of dealing with the past and redressing human rights violations, however, masculinities are only insufficiently attended to and addressed. This also applies to transitional justice mechanisms, processes and policies across the globe, most of which, as this report shows, only marginally attend to the linkages between militarism, masculinities, violence and impunity. In response to those grave oversights and shortcomings, this report puts forward a set of concrete and actionable recommendations, addressed towards the international community, states, civil society organizations, the UN, and transitional justice mechanisms, on how to better integrate militarized masculinities, and how to account for the linkages between militarism, masculinities, violence and impunity | |
